The Coast Guard has published its decision on a rulemaking petition to allow non-load line river barges to operate between Chicago (Calumet) and Muskegon, Michigan.

In Oct 2013, the Coast Guard received two petitions to establish an exemption that would allow non-LL river barges to transit on Lake Michigan between Chicago (Calumet), Illinois, and Muskegon, Michigan. After reviewing the comments submitted during a 90-day public comment period, and in consideration of other factors, the Coast Guard has decided to deny the petition for reasons explained in the Notice.
