Last week, the Liquefied Gas Carrier National Center of Expertise, or LGC NCOE, held another bimonthly Coast Guard liquefied gas webinar in Port Arthur, Texas. These webinars are used to train Coast Guard vessel inspectors, facility examiners, pollution responders, security personnel and planners around the country, who are or are soon to be involved in the liquefied gas industry. The LGC NCOE works with the private sector to train Coast Guard personnel on the newest technologies.
This session was presented by Black & Veatch, or B&V, a global leader in engineering and construction services for the oil and gas industry, amongst many other industries. B&V specializes in various liquefaction technologies used to convert natural gas to Liquefied Natural Gas, or LNG, in small, mid and large scale liquefaction projects. According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the agency responsible for authorizing the siting and construction of LNG export facilities, there are 31 approved or proposed LNG onshore and near-shore liquefaction export facilities in the United States. Once operational, the Coast Guard would be responsible for regulating the marine portion of these, and other, liquefaction facilities.
Kyle Haberberger, part of the process engineering group at B&V with experience in both detailed design and front end engineering for LNG and other gas processing facilities, provided an overview of the liquefaction process and the types, advantages, and future of liquefaction systems.
Cmdr. Jason Smith, detachment chief for the LGC NCOE, expressed his appreciation to B&V.
“On behalf of the entire Coast Guard liquefied gas community, I’d like to thank Mr. Haberberger and B&V for providing today’s comprehensive liquefaction training to over 200 Coast Guard members throughout the country,” said CDR Jason Smith. “This type of training is essential to those regulating the numerous liquefaction maritime facilities soon to be in operational, both on and offshore in many Coast Guard captain of the port zones.”
LGC NCOE
The LGC NCOE is one of six nationwide national centers of expertise focusing on providing industry specific consultation and services to the Coast Guard and maritime industry. The LGC NCOE provides technical advice on matters related to liquefied gas in the maritime community; liquefied gas training and outreach opportunities; liquefied gas workforce forecasting and performance development; and technical expertise for the establishment of local and national liquefied gas guidance, policy and regulations.
