The Coast Guard’s Liquefied Gas Carrier National Center of Expertise, or LGC NCOE, and the Office of Design and Engineering Standards coordinated a technical liquefied gas training seminar presented by Gaztransport and Technigaz, or GTT, at Coast Guard Headquarters. The seminar provided more than 100 Coast Guard and class society engineers with an in-depth understanding of the primary cargo containment systems used in over 70 percent of the existing global liquefied natural gas, or LNG, Carrier fleet.
The GTT leadership and engineering team, from their headquarters office in France and North American office in Houston, discussed the design and construction, control and safeguards and the maintenance and inspection techniques used to ensure safe maritime transport of liquefied gases. They also discussed the lifecycle support GTT provides the industry from front end research and development to 24-hour field assistance and response services.
The GTT team was led by GTT President and CEO, Philippe Berterottière, who provided the opening presentation on the state of the global LNG industry and GTT’s role in it.
Rear Adm. Paul Thomas, assistant commandant for prevention policy kicked off the event with some opening remarks.
“I would like to express my personal appreciation for helping to train Coast Guard engineers to better understand the technical aspects of membrane containment systems. The training will provide our current and future Coast Guard leaders with the necessary insight on these complex systems just in time for the expected growth of LNG throughout the maritime community to include the numerous liquefaction facilities and LNG carriers to support them as well as the use of LNG as a marine fuel and the associated bunkering operations,” said Thomas.
Berterottière expressed the shared importance of ensuring both regulators and industry understand the risks, safeguards and services available to maintain the industry’s safety record.
