The Coast Guard published Marine Safety Information Bulletin 01-16, or MSIB 01-16, to provide updates on the risks associated with the Zika virus.
Recently, the World Health Organization designated the Zika virus as a global public health emergency. This has prompted questions from the maritime industry regarding reporting requirements for any vessel crewmembers or passengers who may be exhibiting symptoms of the Zika virus.
MSIB 01-16 reminds vessel and facility representatives of requirements to report hazardous conditions and illnesses and provides key points to remember regarding the virus.
