The Coast Guard is pleased to announce the winners and congratulate students who participated in the 2018 student art contest co-sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard, the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), and the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of American States (CIP-OAS). Annually, these organizations invite students in grades K-12 throughout the Americas (North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean) to create posters on a theme related to the marine environment. The theme of this year’s contest was “Better Shipping for a Better Future.” Two grand prize winners and 10 finalists were chosen from over 100 participants.

The contest winners’ works of art will be featured on the Coast Guard, NAMEPA and CIP-OAS websites. The two grand prize winners will receive a certificate, a bilingual (English and Spanish) calendar featuring the art of all 12 winners, a $100 cash prize and a special Coast Guard-themed package. Finalists will receive a certificate and the bilingual calendar.

Maritime Commons would like to congratulate the grand prize winners of this year’s competition, 5th grader Tarikka, Millstone River School, Plainsboro Township, New Jersey, and 12th grader Karolina, Marine Academy of Science and Technology, Highlands, New Jersey. We wanted to share with our readers the students’ unique views of the role maritime industry plays in our world.
