4/16/2019: Marijuana use remains incompatible with sea service despite changes in state laws

Every year, dangerous drug use disrupts or destroys the careers of hundreds of professional mariners, threatening safety throughout the maritime transportation system at the same time. U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Department of Transportation chemical testing continues to identify as dangerous drug users individuals with significant amounts of THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, metabolized into their system. Marijuana use remains criminal at the federal level under U.S. Code.

12/26/2018: Third party oversight – one year after the commandant’s Final Action Memo on the El Faro sinking

On Dec. 22, 2017, the commandant of the Coast Guard released the Final Action Memo for the Report of the Marine Board of Investigation into the sinking of the steam ship El Faro and the loss of its 33 crewmembers. In the FAM, the commandant signaled the Coast Guard’s commitment to making improvements to prevent similar marine casualties. This post highlights the actions taken to address gaps in third party oversight and the Alternate Compliance Program in the year since the FAM was released.

10/19/2018: National Cybersecurity Awareness Month – Governmental Agencies Interaction and Resources

The Coast Guard works with other governmental agencies and private partners to identify best practices and resources for cyber risk management. These key partnerships are important to help ensure efforts to combat cybersecurity issues are most efficiently managed. This article highlights governmental agencies’ cyber interactions and some of the resources they can provide.
