5/20/2019: Coast Guard gives three-day LNG training to Panama Canal Authority

Staff with the Liquefied Gas Carrier National Center of Expertise (LGC NCOE) delivered training May 7-10, 2019, on all aspects of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to representatives from the Panama Canal Authority and Panama Maritime Authority, and first responders. LGC NCOE staff covered a wide array of topics pertinent to the transportation of LNG to include the chemical and physical properties of LNG, LNG gas carriers, LNG terminals, and the use of LNG as a marine fuel.

4/18/2019: Recap of Gulf of Mexico Area Maritime Security Committee annual meeting

The Gulf of Mexico Area Maritime Security Committee held its annual general meeting March 21 at the City Council Chambers in Kenner, Louisiana, to update stakeholders on the state of security planning and operations, including any emerging threats to their assets, as well as best practices that have been discovered to mitigate those threats. More than seventy people who work in the realm of maritime security in the Gulf of Mexico attended the meeting, which also provided an opportunity for networking amongst security stakeholders in order to build a wider network of resources for enhancing security in the Gulf of Mexico.

4/17/2019: Marine Safety Alert – Confined Spaces: Silent & Invisible Killers

The Inspections and Compliance Directorate issued Marine Safety Alert 04-19, “Confined Spaces: Silent & Invisible Killers” to remind mariners that despite decades of work by to improve confined space entry by maritime safety organizations, training institutions, and vessel owners/operators, the risks have not been eliminated. This is illustrated by a recent casualty where three persons were asphyxiated while working onboard a laid-up Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit. Although the investigation is not yet complete, the following information is being conveyed with the continued hope that it will highlight this hazard with the aim to prevent recurrence.

4/2/2019: Coast Guard, industry experts hold 6th Outer Continental Shelf Inspectors Course

The OCS Inspectors Course familiarizes Coast Guard marine inspectors and port state control officers with their responsibilities in examining foreign-flagged Mobile Offshore Drilling Units operating on the U.S. OCS. Qualified instructors from the Outer Continental Shelf National Center of Expertise and subject matter experts from Shell and Sparrows Group taught the course.
