In March, we announced the winners of the Rear Admiral Richard E. Bennis Award for Excellence in maritime security. Since April, leaders from around the Coast Guard have presented awards to the five winners. Rear Adm. John Nadeau, assistant commandant for prevention policy, made the final presentation this week, and Maritime Commons is sharing additional details about the achievements that earned the five winners this prestigious award.
In the fourth and final post in our series covering Coast Guard participation in Posidonia earlier this month, we share a condensed version of remarks by Rear Adm. John to a group of young maritime professionals and junior seafarers on the next chapter of shipping and the impacts of digitalization and the role of Safety Management Systems.
In part three of our Posidonia series, we share a condensed version of Rear Adm. John Nadeau’s remarks given during a conference jointly sponsored by the American Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, North American Marine Environment Protection Association, and the International Propeller Club in Port of Piraeus. Nadeau talks further about ballast water management regulations, and then closes with a discussion on global trends and the impacts to the Marine Transportation System.
The Coast Guard congratulates the Charleston Area Maritime Security Committee as the recipient of the 2017 AMSC of the Year award. The award is based on outstanding achievements and contributions in safeguarding the Marine Transportation System, including port areas, adjacent waterways, coastal and/or shore areas, waterfront facilities, and other maritime critical infrastructure and key assets.

Throughout the month of May, the Coast Guard’s Office of Port and Facility Compliance, in coordination with ABS Group, provided four opportunities for Area Maritime Security Committee members to participate in “Marine Transportation System Cyber Awareness Training” via webinar. Over 200 AMSC members and port stakeholders participated in the sessions. In consideration of those who were not able to participate, the Coast Guard has made a recording of the training that is now available online.
The semi-annual workshop was hosted at the offices of the American Chemistry Council. Attendees came from as far away as Seattle and New Orleans and represented 11 industry organizations that oversee thousands of MTSA-regulated vessels and over two hundred MTSA-regulated facilities that share common business models. Industries represented include passenger, ferry and gaming vessels, offshore service and towing vessels, chemical and barge fleeting facilities, and grain terminals.

3/29/2018: Reminder – application period for Towing Safety Advisory Committee membership open until April 10
The Coast Guard will consider applications for five positions that will be vacant Sept. 30, 2018: Two positions representing the barge and towing industry, reflecting a regional geographical balance; one position representing the offshore mineral and oil supply vessel industry; one position representing shippers; and one position drawn from the general public to serve as a Special Government Employee. To be eligible, applicants should have particular expertise, knowledge, and experience regarding shallow-draft inland, coastal waterway, and offshore, navigation and towing safety.
