The 2015 Coast Guard Authorization Act requires the Coast Guard to commission a working group to review existing and new examination questions for accuracy, and review the accuracy and availability of examination references, length of examinations, and the use of standard technologies in administering, scoring, and analyzing examinations. 9/11/2017: New set of sample merchant mariner exams now available
The Coast Guard announced in a bulletin Sept. 8, 2017, that a new set of sample merchant mariner exams is available on the National Maritime Center’s (NMC) website. Section 315 of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015 requires the Coast Guard to make sample merchant mariner credential examinations and an outline of examination topics readily available to the public.

9/9/2017: Credentials lost due to Harvey or Irma
The National Maritime Center issued a bulletin September 7 as a reminder that in accordance with federal regulations, duplicate Merchant Mariner Credentials may be issued free of charge to mariners whose credentials were lost or destroyed as a result of hurricane Harvey or Irma.
9/7/2017: Temporary closure of Regional Exam Center Miami
The National Maritime Center posted a bulletin announcing that the Regional Exam Center (REC) in Miami will be closed beginning Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, due to Hurricane Irma. Please do not fax or mail applications to this REC until further notice.
