Marine Safety Alert: Inspectors discover unwearable PFDs

This safety alert concerns Cal-June Jim-Buoy PFDs, Model #601 or #603. During several inspections involving different vessels, Coast Guard personnel discovered a significant number of Type I PFDs that were not wearable if needed during an emergency.

“All Aboard! There’s a Place for You in the Maritime Community” student art program contest winners

Marine Safety Alert: Prevent Passenger High-Risk Behaviors

A passenger who intentionally jumps into the water from a commercial passenger vessel or who falls from the vessel as a result of high-risk behavior may be considered to be interfering with the safe operation of a vessel as defined by 46 U.S. Code 2302. Offenders are subject to a fine up to $34,000.

Commercial Fishing Occupational Safety Research Cooperative Agreement and Training Project Grant award recipients named

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Coast Guard are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Commercial Fishing Occupational Safety Research Cooperative Agreement and Training Project Grant Program. This year’s program made nine awards totaling $5.25 million to support critical research and training projects to improve the occupational safety of workers in the high-risk commercial fishing industry.

The U.S. Coast Guard released its 2018 Recreational Boating Statistics Report Tuesday, revealing that there were 633 boating fatalities nationwide in 2018, a 3.8 percent decrease from 2017.
