Marine Safety Manual Vol. II restructured into seven Commandant Instructions

The Coast Guard Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance (CG-CVC) announces the cancellation of Marine Safety Manual (MSM) Volume II, COMDTINST M16000.7B, and its replacement with seven separate Commandant Instructions, one for each chapter of the previously existing manual. 

MSIB – Procedural Clarification: Continuous Synopsis Records

The Coast Guard has published Marine Safety Information Bulletin 09-21 “Procedural Clarification: Continuous Synopsis Records” to clarify the process for applications for Continuous Synopsis Records. MSIB 003-14 on this subject is hereby cancelled.

Final Rule: Financial Responsibility-Vessels; Superseded Pollution Funds

The Coast Guard announced in the Federal Register that it is expanding regulations on vessel financial responsibility for all tank vessel s greater than 100 gross tons as required by statute, and making other amendments that clarify and update reporting requirements.

Congressional hearing alert – “The evolving cybersecurity landscape: Federal perspectives on securing the Nation’s infrastructure”

The Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, Rear Admiral John Mauger, will testify Dec. 2, 2021, before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure regarding cybersecurity.

Federal Register Notice: National Towing Safety Advisory Committee teleconference scheduled

The Coast Guard announced in the Federal Register that the National Towing Safety Advisory Committee will meet via teleconference Dec. 7, 2021 to discuss the election of officers, issuance of new task statements, and stand-up of the Task Statement Vetting Committee.

Marine Safety Alert: Verify products from Southwest Wire Rope Company- incorrect terminations can lead to catastrophic failure

The Coast Guard Office of Investigations and Analysis has released Marine Safety Alert 08-21, to notify mariners to a potentially dangerous situation involving incorrect wire rope terminations which can lead to catastrophic failure.

Coast Guard Cyber Protection Teams train for the fight

To counter cyber threats the Coast Guard has created Cyber Protection Teams (CPT).  Based in Washington, D.C. CPT is the Coast Guard’s deployable unit responsible for offering
cybersecurity capabilities to the Marine Transportation System (MTS).
