Icebreaking operations begin in Great Lakes

Ice breaking operations begin in response to expanded ice growth in the commercial ports of western Lake Superior. In the coming weeks, various commercial waterways may close after due consideration is given to the protection of the marine environment and the safety of island residents who, in the course of their daily business, use naturally-formed ice bridges for transportation to and from the mainland.

12/18/2017: Coast Guard begins icebreaking operations in the western Great Lakes

Operation Taconite is the Coast Guard’s largest domestic icebreaking operation. The operation encompasses Lake Superior, St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, Georgian Bay, and Lake Michigan, and places additional movement criteria on commercial ships operating in the area.

1/30/2017: Joint US/Canadian Interagency Marine Casualty Response Table Top Exercise

Recently, Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) Massena hosted a joint U.S. and Canadian multi-agency Marine Casualty Table Top Exercise. More than 20 U.S. and Canadian representatives from MSD Massena, Sector Buffalo, the Coast Guard 9th District, St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC), St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) and Transport Canada attended the one-day event.
